Iizuka did not detail the project, but said the team plans to build a new kind of gameplay experience through changes to characters, story and game systems.

That's a notable statement heading into the character's 35th anniversary year.

Sonic Frontiers only recently arrived on Nintendo Switch 2, and Iizuka pointed to that game's open-zone structure as a jumping-off point for what comes next, alongside the Color Powers mechanic introduced in Sonic Colors.

Iizuka On Sega's Push To Cancel Sonic

Speaking to media at the same event, Iizuka said Sega's higher-ups had at one point told him to cancel the entire franchise, and that he had to fight internally to keep it alive, according to Time Extension.

He credited the 2020 live-action Sonic film with turning that around. Iizuka called it the biggest milestone of his career on the franchise, saying it changed Sonic's trajectory in a way nothing else had.

Even so, Iizuka was firm that Sonic's screen success hasn't shifted where Sega's priorities sit. He said the franchise is rooted in video games, and that everything else is built on that foundation.

What's Still Unknown

Neither outlet's report includes a platform list, release window or title for the new project. Iizuka's TGS remarks, translated from a 4Gamer interview, stopped short of specifics on what the new gameplay systems will actually involve.

What's confirmed is the direction of travel. Sonic Team is treating Sonic Frontiers as a template to expand on, not a one-off experiment, and Iizuka's framing suggests the next game will lean further into systemic changes.

Sonic debuted on Sega Genesis in 1991. The series has since passed 1.5 billion copies sold, a milestone that sits behind Iizuka's push to keep evolving the format rather than repeat it.

For now, players have Sonic Frontiers on Switch 2 to hold them over, with Sega yet to set a date for revealing whatever comes next.
